How to Dress and Get Ready for Your Family Portrait

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match

  • Avoid Matching Outfits: Rather than everyone wearing the same thing (like identical shirts), opt for coordinating colors and styles. This allows each person’s individuality to shine while still looking unified.

  • Choose a Color Palette: Pick a set of complementary colors (e.g., navy, gray, and cream) and have each person dress in variations of those colors. Neutral tones like beige, white, black, gray, and soft pastels are timeless and photograph beautifully.

2. Keep It Classic & Timeless

  • Avoid Trendy Pieces: Stick with classic, simple clothing that won’t look dated in a few years. Avoid clothing with large logos, graphics, or busy patterns that can distract from the faces.

  • Go for Solid Colors: Solid-colored clothes tend to photograph better and keep the focus on your faces. Avoid overly bright colors or neon shades, which can be overpowering in a photo.

3. Choose Comfortable & Well-Fitted Clothing

  • Fit Over Size: Make sure everyone’s clothes fit properly. Clothes that are too tight or too loose can be unflattering. Aim for comfort—if the outfit feels good, it will show in the photos.

  • No Tight or Restrictive Clothing: Choose fabrics that allow for movement and comfort, especially if young children are involved. Avoid tight waistbands or anything that may leave marks on the skin.

  • No Wrinkles: Make sure everything is pressed or steamed to remove any wrinkles. Wrinkles can distract from the final look and make the portrait feel less polished.

4. Pay Attention to Shoes

  • Simple, Neat Footwear: Shoes are an important detail, even if they’re not always the main focus. For a polished look, make sure shoes are clean and simple—nothing too flashy or casual like flip-flops or athletic shoes unless they fit the theme of the shoot.

5. Hair & Grooming

  • Haircuts & Trims: Make sure everyone’s hair is freshly styled, and for those with longer hair, ensure it's neatly brushed or styled. For children, keep hair looking tidy and natural.

  • Men: If facial hair is part of your style, ensure it's neatly groomed. Clean shaven is another good option, depending on your family’s preferences.

  • Women: Keep makeup natural, enhancing your features without overdoing it. Consider a neutral color palette for a soft, timeless look. Touch up hair if needed before the shoot.

6. Avoid Distractions

  • Keep Jewelry Simple: Opt for simple, minimal jewelry. Large or flashy pieces can distract from the faces and overall aesthetic of the portrait.

  • No Hats or Accessories: While hats and accessories can be fun, they may obscure faces in group photos. If you do want to wear one, make sure it complements the overall look without being a distraction.

7. For Young Children

  • Bring Extra Clothes: Kids can be unpredictable, so bring an extra set of clothes in case of spills or accidents. Having a backup will help you feel more relaxed.

  • Comfortable Clothing: Make sure kids are comfortable in their clothing. If they’re fidgeting or unhappy with what they’re wearing, it will show in the photo. Soft fabrics and familiar shoes are best.

8. Consider the Setting

  • Outdoor or Indoor?: Consider the environment of your photoshoot (studio or outdoors). For outdoor shoots, natural colors and layers work well, while indoor studio portraits can be a bit more formal.

  • Bring Props If Desired: If there are any meaningful props, such as family heirlooms or personal items (like a child’s favorite stuffed animal), feel free to bring them along. Just be sure they don't overwhelm the portrait.

9. The Day Of the Shoot

  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled shoot time. This gives everyone time to relax, adjust their clothing, and get into the right mindset.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water leading up to the shoot, so you’re looking fresh and glowing.

  • Relax and Enjoy: Don’t stress too much about perfection. Enjoy the process and focus on the connections between you and your family. The best photos come when everyone is having fun and feels relaxed.
